ECU Repair & Programming — Frequently Asked Questions

ECU stands for Engine Control Unit — it's basically your car's brain. It
controls fuel injection, ignition timing and a lot of other things that keep
your engine running properly. When it fails, your car usually won't start.

It depends on what's wrong. A lot of ECUs that get written off can actually
be repaired — corrupted software, water damage and electrical faults are all things we deal with regularly. We check it first before recommending anything.

Every ECU is matched to one VIN number. If you swap it out for a used one, your car won't recognize it and won't start. Cloning copies the data from your old ECU onto the new one so your car treats it as the original.

Most jobs are done within 24-48 hours of us receiving the ECU. Mail-in orders usually go back out within 2-3 business days. If something takes longer we'll let you know upfront.

Yes — almost always. ECUs are matched to a specific vehicle. A replacement unit needs to be either cloned from your original or programmed to your car before it'll work properly.

When you've lost every key to your car, the vehicle has no way to verify a new key. We reprogram the ECU and immobilizer together so new keys can be recognized and the car starts again.

Sometimes yes. Water damage varies — some ECUs come back fine after proper drying and cleaning, others have board damage that can't be fixed. We'll tell you honestly after we look at it.

They're essentially the same thing — different manufacturers use different names. ECU is Engine Control Unit, ECM is Engine Control Module, PCM is Powertrain Control Module. We work on all of them.

Remove the ECU from your vehicle, wrap it in bubble wrap, put it in a sturdy box and include a note with your name, phone number, vehicle make, model and year, and what the problem is. Ship it to us and we'll be in touch when it arrives.

Yes — domestic and foreign. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and more. If it has an ECU, ECM or PCM, we can work on it.

Your immobilizer is a security system built into your car. It talks to your ECU to confirm the key is genuine before allowing the engine to start. When the two stop communicating — usually after a module swap or electrical fault — the car won't start even with the correct key.

Yes — but it needs to be either cloned or reprogrammed first. A used ECU still has the previous vehicle's data on it. Drop it off or ship it to us and we'll match it to your VIN so your car accepts it properly.
